R-R-R-A-V-E-E-E-N-S, RAVENS!
Oh god. In a blog on Alaskan politics, why would I suddenly find myself talking about High School Football? Well, the old alma matta, Ben Eielson High has been undefeated in football this season. With a 9-0 record this season, the Ravens are headed to the State Championship game tomorrow to face off against Kenai (7-2).
So where does the politics enter in? Good question. A few years ago, Eielson was reassigned to the Small Schools division. Back when I went to school there (1987-1991), Eielson fought against the other big schools. There was nothing better then going to cheer on the team as they went head to head with North Pole, Lathrop, West Valley, and the myriad of teams from Anchorage.
Now, they play small schools such as Skyview and Houston. Only one game, played by the JV team, was against North Pole. The results speak for themselves. Eielson went undefeated, at least one game in which the other side scored nothing, or huge blowouts with scores looking more like they were from a basketball game.
In the past, Eielson has shown that it can hold its own against the large schools. Even without the likes of the esteemed Buck Nystrom, the team is doing very well under the guidance of David DeVaughn. They should be given the chance to play against them again.

Thanks. I guess in reference to this post, I should mention that Eielson lost to Kenai on Saturday. I guess I just find the idea of divisions based on school size goofy. With a good coach and motivated players, school size shouldn’t make a difference.
Anyway, thanks for passing through. Hope you’ll be back!
