Today I passed the Motorcycle permit written test. Next month, I’m hoping to take the Basic Rider course that’s offered by a local group. I just have to get my cash together for that, as it’s not exactly cheap.
And I have to admit, cheap is the goal of this midlife crisis. The bike I have in mind is the Kawasaki KLR650, a dual-sport bike aimed at riders looking to get away from the paved roads. It’s also one of the least expensive street legal bikes around at a bit over $5K. With a fuel tank of just over six gallons and about 60 miles per gallon, that could get me from Fairbanks to Anchorage on a tank of gas. Put another way, that’s more than twice the mileage of my Corolla.
Of course, it’s not Anchorage that peaks my riding interest. It’s all the nifty places I haven’t been, such as up the Dalton Highway, where I’ve been afraid to take my car.

Yeah, that’s as far as I dared go in my Corolla. I’ll need plenty of riding experience before I tackle that challenge, but many other more manageable ones exist around here that can help me build the needed experience.
